Pompeii

Pompeii is a city interrupted mid-sentence. Buried by Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD and rediscovered centuries later almost perfectly preserved, it offers something no museum ever could: an entire Roman city frozen at the exact moment daily life stopped, its bakeries, villas, and streets still bearing the marks of that final ordinary morning. Walking the ancient roads of Pompeii feels less like sightseeing and more like trespassing on the past. The Forum still holds the outline of civic life, the House of the Faun still hints at private wealth, and the amphitheater still suggests the roar of a crowd. Plaster casts of the victims, caught in their final moments, remain the site's most haunting reminder of what happened here. Mount Vesuvius looms over it all, close enough that its presence is impossible to ignore, and a reminder of exactly why this city ended the way it did. There is little conventional dining within the ruins themselves, but the surrounding region offers a fitting counterpoint to all that history: fresh mozzarella from nearby dairies, wine grown on the same volcanic soil that once destroyed the city, and simple trattorias where the pace of a good meal is the perfect antidote to a morning spent among ghosts.
