Some places are born from a single moment in history. Corfu Imperial was born from all of them at once. Part of the Grecotel collection, Corfu Imperial occupies its own private peninsula, Kommeno, a golden arrow of land reaching into the Ionian, forty minutes from Corfu's airport, with Blue Flag beaches, rocky coves, and secret bays all within reach on foot.

Four centuries of Venetian rule left Corfu with a certain grandeur, and the hotel carries it openly: honey-coloured archways that echo Venetian campaniles, olive groves older than memory, marble and Murano glass throughout the interiors. At dusk, the light seems borrowed from a Fellini frame, that particular amber hour when champagne is poured and time agrees to stand still. The hotel calls this feeling La Bella Vita, and it's not far off the mark.

Rooms come with views as if you're cruising the Ionian; swim-up bungalows sit closer still to the water. For longer stays or bigger groups, a collection of waterfront villas and palazzi brings private pools and proper space, alongside new penthouse suites for those who want the top floor. It's built as comfortably for a couple wanting a room with a view as for three generations of one family taking over a palazzo for the week.

Dining runs to nine restaurants and bars. Yali is the one to book first, a floating deck over the main beach where the hotel's own fisherman brings in the day's catch and lays it out on ice. Aristos, named for Aristotle Onassis, serves fine French dining in a nautical room surrounded by original paintings of Aristotle and Jackie Onassis. Merlin's Bar takes its name from the English botanist who introduced the kumquat to Corfu from China in 1840, cultivating it on the very estate where the hotel now stands. The fruit became a protected local variety, and the bar's kumquat Campari spritz is the one to order. A proper Trattoria covers the Italian side of the table, with five further concepts besides.

What sets Corfu Imperial apart from a very good beach week is Danilia Village, a recreated Corfiot village fourteen minutes down the road, complete with a working olive mill and vineyard, a folklore museum, an old-fashioned print shop, and its own Kafeneion café. Guests get exclusive guided tours every Tuesday and Friday, transfer and a treat included, with the option of a candlelit dinner back in the village after dark. On Kommeno, the hotel's private island, there's a diving centre, an outdoor cinema, and yoga by the water, next to the jetty used for yachting days among the Greek islands or the signature cruise into Corfu's Old Town.
