Few cities sit as dramatically between mountain and sea as Rio de Janeiro. Mornings can begin with the cable car up Sugarloaf for views across Guanabara Bay, or a climb through Tijuca, the largest urban forest in the world, to Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado. Afternoons belong to Ipanema and Leblon, where the beach culture spills into the cafés, boutiques, and restaurants of the city's most polished neighborhoods. Evenings move to samba in Lapa and, each February or March, to the Sambadrome for Carnival. For a slower pace, the colonial town of Paraty and the beaches of Búzios lie within easy reach, best visited in the drier months between May and October.

Every corner of the world holds something extraordinary.
