The Balmoral, A Rocco Forte Hotel
The Balmoral Hotel is more than just an accommodation; it is an unmistakable emblem on the Edinburgh skyline. It stands with distinction at No 1 Princes Street, a prime location that grants it a majestic outlook over the iconic Edinburgh Castle. The hotel is easily recognised from afar thanks to its majestic clock tower, an architectural silhouette that plays a central role in the city's aesthetic. Its accessibility is outstanding: it is situated directly adjacent to Waverley Rail Station and is only eight miles from Edinburgh International Airport, translating to a quick 20-minute taxi ride.
The rich history of this building dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. Initially known as The North British Station Hotel and owned by the North British Railway Company, its design was the result of a competition won by architects W. Hamilton Beattie and A.R. Scott. The hotel first opened its doors on October 15th, 1902. As the decades passed, the need for modernisation became apparent, and it closed in 1988 to undergo a major refurbishment. Following this significant work, it reopened in 1991 under its current name, The Balmoral. Another milestone in its journey occurred on March 1st, 1997, when Sir Rocco Forte purchased the property, integrating it into his prestigious hotel collection.
The most recent interior renovation has been led by Olga Polizzi, Director of Building & Design for Rocco Forte Hotels, who has drawn deep inspiration from the Scottish landscape to redefine its aesthetic. Polizzi has brought the essence of Scotland into the hotel's interior, using a palette of colours and textures that directly evoke the region's nature. The carpets, paint colours, and fabrics used throughout the hotel reflect the earthy colours of the moors, the pervasive mists, and the hues of heather, creating an atmosphere that feels authentically connected to its surroundings.
Regarding accommodation, The Balmoral offers a total of 187 bedrooms, including 20 suites. Many of these are strategically designed to provide stunning views of Edinburgh Castle, the historic charm of the Old Town, and the hills surrounding the Scottish capital.
